Located on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, Christchurch has a world-renowned adventure playground on its doorstep

Christchurch is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, beautiful Banks Peninsula and the rich farmlands of the Canterbury Plains. The towering Southern Alps are less than 100 kilometres away and the resort towns of Queenstown, Wanaka and Milford Sound are all within easy reach.

Canterbury was hit by devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 however, the city is on an exciting journey to build the world’s newest city for the 21st century and beyond.

Known as the `Garden City’, Christchurch is home to 370,000+ residents who are spoilt when it comes to outdoor activities. The city boasts more than 700 city parks, 15 golf courses and the nearby Port Hills which are ideal for walking, running and biking. With great annual sunshine hours there is plenty of time to enjoy it all!

Getting around

Christchurch is mostly flat, so it really lends itself to cycling and there are quite a few cycling lanes or shared pedestrian and bike paths. When you are cycling in the inner city you only need one gear because there are no hills to climb!

Navigation by car or bicycle is generally simple due to the grid layout, but watch out for one-way streets and bus-and-taxi-only intersections in the central city.

Public bus services cover the whole city and areas of interest such as Sumner, New Brighton Beaches and Lyttleton which lie outside the central city. There is also a restored Tramway that runs in a smaller loop around the inner city.

Christchurch Airport is the gateway for Christchurch and the South Island. Travel time from the airport direct to Christchurch city centre is approximately 15-20 minutes.

Claim to fame

Christchurch is known for its English heritage. Flat-bottomed punts glide on the Avon River, which meanders through the city centre. On its banks are cycling paths, the green expanse of Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

Christchurch boasts a vibrant festival, arts and culture scene that attracts international performers and recognition.

As with the rest of the country, Cantabrians love their rugby and Christchurch is home to the very successful Canterbury Crusaders Super Rugby franchise. If snow and surf are your thing, Christchurch provides the opportunity to do both in the same day due to its unique location and proximity to the mountains and sea.
